The film was a huge commercial success and became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 1991. The film's music, composed by Nadeem-Shravan, was also very popular and featured some of the most memorable songs of the 90s, such as "Mera Dil Bhi Kitna Pagal Hai", "Bahut Pyar Karte Hain", "Dekha Hai Pehli Baar", and "Tu Shayar Hai".
The film revolves around the love triangle between Aman Verma (Sanjay Dutt), Akash Verma (Salman Khan), and Pooja Saxena (Madhuri Dixit). Aman is an orphan who was adopted by Akash's wealthy parents when he was a child. Aman is a talented poet who writes under the pen name Sagar, but he is also physically disabled and suffers from low self-esteem. Akash is a carefree and happy-go-lucky person who loves his brother Aman dearly. He is also a fan of Sagar's poetry and wants to meet him someday. Pooja is a beautiful and independent woman who works as an editor for a magazine. She is also an admirer of Sagar's poetry and falls in love with him through his words.
One day, Akash meets Pooja at a traffic signal and is instantly smitten by her. He follows her to her office and pretends to be a poet named Sagar. He impresses Pooja with his charm and wit, but he also borrows some of Aman's poems to woo her. Pooja believes that Akash is Sagar and starts developing feelings for him. Meanwhile, Aman also meets Pooja at a hospital where he goes for his treatment. He recognizes her as Sagar's editor and becomes friends with her. He also realizes that she is the one he has been writing for all these years. However, he does not reveal his identity to her, fearing that she will reject him because of his disability.
As the story progresses, Pooja finds out that Akash is not Sagar and feels betrayed by him. She also learns that Aman is the real Sagar and confesses her love to him. Aman reciprocates her feelings, but he decides to sacrifice his love for the sake of his brother's happiness. He tells Pooja that he does not love her and asks her to marry Akash instead. He also convinces Akash that he does not have any feelings for Pooja and encourages him to propose to her. However, Akash senses that something is wrong and confronts Aman about his true feelings. Aman breaks down and admits that he loves Pooja more than anything in the world. Akash realizes that he has been selfish and decides to unite Aman and Pooja. He tells Pooja the truth about Aman's sacrifice and asks her to choose the one she truly loves. Pooja chooses Aman and they get married with Akash's blessings.
